Sushruta was indeed a bright student 

of veterinary medicine. His teacher, 

Shalihotra, once decided to test him.

He asked Sushruta what all he would 

need to perform a surgery on a wonderful 

horse. Sushruta, very quickly listed down 

all the instruments and the medicines that 

would be needed.

“Three things are missing.’’ Shalihotra 

said.

Confused, Sushruta looked at him.

“I will give you a week to find them.’’ 

Shalihotra consoled.

Curious to find out what those three 

things were, Sushruta observed his teacher 

carefully for the next one week.

Before operating the horse, Shalihotra 

observed every part of the horse. And then 

Sushruta found the first missing thing! 

‘A good veterinarian should have an 

eagle’s eye.’

Then Shalihotra treated the animal as 

if it were his own; balancing science and

 आमचे कात्रे मास्तर.अंगाने सडपातळ , दम्याच्या विकाराने त्यांना कधी त्रास व्हायचा. कात्रे मास्तरांच्या घरी माझे वडील  लाकडं फोडायला जायचे.

 श्री. गोळीवडेकर मास्तर मला मराठी पाचवीत होते. ते इतिहास भूगोल शिकवायचे. त्यात इंग्रजी पाहिलीत  तरखडकराचे पहिले भाषांतर शिकवायचे. श्री. गोळीवडेकर खरे शेतीतज्ञ शिक्षक. शाळेच्या बागा करण्यातच  त्यांचं अर्धं लक्ष असे. त्यात त्यांचा व माझा जवळचा.परिचय झाला. त्याच कारण शाळेच्या ' बागा' आमच्यासारख्या मुलांच्या जीवावरच तर उभ्या होत. आम्ही मुलं वयान  तसचं हाडा - पिंडाने मोठाड  कष्टाच्या कामाला कणखर . शाळेची गावच्या ओढ्याकाठची बाग ही खरे तर आम्हा  मुलांच्या जीवावर चांगली फुललेली ,उभी असे. या बागेतल्या विहीरीच पाणी दोन - दोन तास रहाटेनेओढून ,  बागेतल्या फुळझाडाना , फळझाडांना आम्ही देत असू. तेव्हा ती  फुलझाडं-  फलझाडं तरारून उभी राहत होती. त्यामुळे श्री. गोलीवडेकर  मास्टर आमच्यावर प्रेम करायचे. बागेतील जमीन कुदळी, टिकावाने खांदावयाची, त्याचे वाफे करायचे, बंध घालायचे अशी सगळी कष्टाची कामे आम्ही मुलं करत असू.

इतकं महत्त्व त्या झाडाला आलेलं पाहून मी चकित होऊन गेलो होतो. ज्या घराची हकीकत मी सांगतो आहे, ती एक जोड इमारत होती. ट्वीन ब्लॉक . शेजारी जे राहत होते, त्यांच्या परसदारी  चक्क पाण्याचा हापसा होता म्हणजे भरपूर पाणी होते. मात्र अंगणात आणि परसदारात. गवताची काडी ही नव्हती. माणसं उदास, दुर्मुखलेली,त्रस्त वाटत त्या घरातली स्त्री नेहमी दागिने.घालून बसे ; परंतु पाणी  आणि जमीन मुबलक असतानाही त्यांनी हिरवा आनंद पसरवण्याचा प्रयत्न कधी केला नाही .मला वाटतं झाड लावणं , ते जगवण, त्या व्दारे दूरवर आनंदाचे  आणि आश्वासनांचे संगीतमय.संदेश पसरवण आणि सर्व  सजीवांचे आशीर्वाद घेणं ही एक प्रवृत्तीच असावी

लागते.जो माणूस एखाद झाड जगवतो,तो निसर्गात एक ' हिरवा चमत्कार रुजवत असतो . हे लिंबाचं झाडचं  बघा ना! ज्या  कुण्या बाईन हे झाड लावलं होत, ती बाई  इथून निघून गेली होती ; परंतु जाताना एक अदभुत नाट्य.ती आपल्या माग ठेवून गेली .  दर वर्षी, दर. ऋतूत त्या झाडाच्या अनुषंगानं एक उत्सव साजरा होत असणार, फुलं येत असणारं  घमघमाट दरवळत असणारं आणि मग एक  अख्खा फलोत्सव ..... फळांचं  लगडणं ...‌....हे सगळं घडत असणार , मी तर केवळ एका ऋतुतला  सजीवांच्या जागत्या नांदत्या अस्तिवाचा साक्षीदार होतो; पण शेजारची ती माणसं? ती अनेक वर्ष त्या घरात राहत आलेली होती ; परंतु न त्यांनी ते ' हिरवं कौतुक ' पाहिलं , न त्यांनी झाडं लावली , न त्यांनी फुलं फुलवली . हा निसर्गातला आनंद त्यांच्या मनात कधी पोचल्याचं मी पाहिलंच नाही . म्हणूनच कदाचित ती 

माणस त्यांच्या  परस - अंगणासारखीच  उदास ,भकास , तपकिरी अशीच वाटत राहिली. मनानं.

निसर्गातील प्रत्येक दृश्य.माणसाच्या मनाला आनंदित करणारे आहे. सूर्यास्ताच्या वेळी आकाशात अवर्णनीय शोभा दिसते. सूर्यबिंब लालभडक झालेले असते आणि मेघाच्या पटलावर संध्यारागाच्या अनंत छटा पसरलेल्या असतात किलबिलाट करीत घरट्याकडे पक्षी परतत असतात. सकाळी भिन्न भिन्न मार्गांनी उडालेले हे पक्षी संध्याकाळी मात्र  गटा गटाने घरट्याकडे येतात .रानावनात चरावयास गेलेली गुरे ढोरे सुद्धा  आतुरतेने घराकडे येतअसतात.गायीची आचळं वासराच्या ओढीनं तुडुंब भरलेलीअसतात.अधीर होऊन हंबरतच त्या गोठ्याकडे धावतात  तेव्हा त्यांच्या गळ्यातील तो घंटानाद कानाला तृप्त करतो. त्याच वेळी त्यांच्या पावलांनी उडालेली धूळ वातावरणातील लाल रंगात मिसळते .आणि वातावरणाला पवित्र करते . मंद मंद वाऱ्याच्या झुळका झाडे वेलीना हिंदळवतात. हळूहळू काळोखाची  मखमल  धरती  पा़घंरते आणि सारे विश्व विश्रांतीत  रममाण होते.
